Unlike most operating systems, the Solaris codebase runs on 32 bit and 64 bit processors, seperate versions are not required for the different architectures. Solaris introduced ZFS which could be the future of computer file systems. ZFS exceeds the limitations of almost all other past and present filesystems.

Sun Microsystems was bought by Oracle in January 2010.
